CREATING SPECIAL PLACES FOR PEOPLE TO GATHER
J2 provided complete hardscape and landscape design for a 280-unit mixed-use building including standard City of Falls Church streetscape on two sides, a public plaza, and an internal courtyard with a swimming pool, outdoor kitchen, and social gathering areas.
THE CHALLENGE
After delivering a completed schematic design package, the architect had to redesign the garage intake vent (a large monolithic shape) relocating it to the courtyard. The exposed shaft, which required openings with louvers on 3 sides to bring air into the shaft and ventilate the garage below, was a significant impediment to the existing concept design.
THE SOLUTION
Rather than camouflage or ignore the vent, J2 embraced its shape integrating it into the design scheme. Working with the MEP to fully understand the open-vent square footage needs, J2 wrapped the shaft with wood purlins offset from the face of the shaft allowing adequate airflow with hidden openings. The wood-wrapped shaft became a centerpiece “wall” creating outdoor rooms including a TV area on one side and a kitchen with extended purlins to create an overhead roof to define the space on another.
