Manassas Airport Runway 16R/34L Rehab As-Built Survey
MINIMIZING OPERATIONAL DISRUPTION WHILE ENSURING QUALITY DATA COLLECTION
J2's comprehensive survey of the rehabilitated Runway 16R/34L at Manassas Regional Airport (HEF) ensured precise as-built information, meeting the FAA and NGS standards for Aeronautical Data Submission using Airports GIS. Our efforts encompassed not only recovering and verifying existing airfield GPS control but also collecting detailed data on the rehabilitated runway and the replaced NAVAIDs.
The resulting as-built data was delivered for review and acceptance by the FAA and NGS, including GIS shapefiles of the airport as-built features attributed per the specifications outlined in FAA AC 150/5300-18B for ‘Survey and Data Standards for Submission of Aeronautical Data Using Airports GIS’.
The Solution
THE SOLUTION
Capturing the as-built centerline profile of an active runway necessitated a strategy that wouldn’t interfere with ongoing airport activities. We innovatively employed a magnetically mounted GPS unit on a vehicle to swiftly traverse the centerline, collecting precise data at timed intervals. This method ensured the creation of an accurate runway profile that not only met stringent FAA data standards but also minimized any potential delays or interference with airport operations.
THE CHALLENGE
Deliver high-quality data while minimizing disruption to airport operations.
