As the world celebrates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11th, we'd like to acknowledge the remarkable individuals who are breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of women in STEM fields.
Today, we shine a spotlight on Gilmarie O’Neill-Medina, a Project Engineer at J2, whose journey embodies dedication, passion, and a relentless commitment to empowering women in engineering.
Her journey began at the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez, where she laid the foundation for her career in civil engineering. However, her contributions extend far beyond her professional endeavors. Gilmarie is also a dedicated board member of Girls in Civil, an organization that champions gender equality and diversity in the construction and civil engineering world.
Girls in Civil is not just an organization; it's a movement—a collective of girls, women, and allies who are passionate about all facets of construction and civil engineering. Their mission is clear: to bridge the gender gap, enhance academic retention in civil engineering programs, and foster inclusivity and diversity within civil works.
Her involvement with Girls in Civil underscores her commitment to paying it forward—mentoring the next generation of female engineers and empowering them to pursue their dreams without limitation.
"Being a woman in Civil Engineering has helped me be more aware and passionate about what I do. It also helped me develop character and be more assertive in knowing that my opinions matter. That is why my goal with Girls in Civil is to make a path for the future generation of women to feel like they have the space to be themselves."
On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we want to celebrate all the women here at J2 who are leading by example and paving the way for a more equitable and diverse future in STEM. Organizations like Girls in Civil serve as a reminder that when we support and uplift women in science and engineering, we unlock the full potential of innovation and drive positive change that benefits us all.
