Route 1 Widening Improvements
CREATIVE DESIGN FOR EXPANSION WHILE MAINTAINING EXISTING UTILITY INFRASTRUCTURE
J2 provided engineering services for the widening of the existing Richmond Highway – Route 1 to include intersection improvements at East Glebe Road and Custis Avenue. The design accommodated two 15’ medians for transit facilities, two exclusive bus lanes between the medians, and two new northbound (NB) lanes with left-turn lanes.
THE CHALLENGE
A key challenge was developing a design to avoid existing utilities. This project had an existing 230kV power line running approximately 12 feet from the proposed inner E/P on the NB lanes and a fiber duct bank running along the proposed NB outer E/P. Utilities could not be impacted because the 230 kV power line feeds Reagan National Airport.
THE SOLUTION
To avoid impact to existing utilities, J2 developed a typical section with reverse cross slope on the NB lanes that minimized drainage crossings of the 230 kV line and eliminated constructing inlets overtop the existing fiber lines. The solution led to construction cost savings and reduced utility relocation delays.
