Route 250 Broad Street Streetscape Improvements
ENHANCING CORRIDOR CONNECTIVITY AND TRAFFIC SAFETY
The Broad Street Streetscape Improvement Project addresses safety and operational needs along 1.3 miles of Route 250 in Waynesboro, Virginia. Key upgrades include replacing the center two-way left-turn lanes with raised medians, adding ADA-compliant curb ramps and crosswalks, mid-block crossings, and completing missing sidewalk connections. These enhancements improve accessibility, reduce collision risks, and provide a safer experience for all users of the corridor.
THE CHALLENGE
The project required strict adherence to the SMART Scale program’s approved layout, limiting design flexibility. Balancing community input while meeting VDOT standards was essential, particularly when modifying the existing roadway to meet modern safety requirements.
THE SOLUTION
J2 is developing a compliant and cost-effective design to improve corridor safety and accessibility. Proposed improvements include raised medians and designated turn bays to enhance traffic flow, as well as ADA-compliant pedestrian facilities, such as mid-block crossings and curb ramps, to ensure accessibility for all users. The team is collaborating with the City of Waynesboro, VDOT and local stakeholders to provide innovative solutions that address community needs while adhering to program requirements.
