DESIGN SOLUTIONS WITH THE FUTURE IN MIND
J2 provided engineering services to design the Cunningham Farms Drive intersection with the existing intersection of Free State Road and W. Main Street in the Town of Marshall. Salem Avenue connects to Cunningham Farms Drive and completes the local street network parallel to and north of W. Main Street. The project involved the development of construction plans for over 2,500 LF of new roadway. During the early stages of the project, a future roundabout was preliminarily designed at this intersection so that the current design would not impact future construction.
The Solution
THE SOLUTION
J2 addressed stormwater management requirements with a smaller enhanced extended detention pond between the sanitary lift station, stream, and intersection of Cunningham Farm Drive. The design was complex given the area available. Volume for the pond was achieved using gabion baskets for the forebay and a weir-wall outlet structure to control flows and serve as the principal and emergency spillway.
THE CHALLENGE
The key challenge involved addressing stormwater management requirements. The adjacent property developer set the extension of Salem Avenue during rezoning and reserved ROW. Locations for a stormwater management facility were constrained by a future VDOT Park & Ride to the south, a future roadway extension of Cunningham Farm Drive to the west, and a wetland stream to the north at the outfall.
