LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA
Shellhorn Road Extension
CONNECTING THE COMMUNITY WITH AN EYE TO THE FUTURE
The extension and realignment of Shellhorn Road, which, once completed, will ease congestion and improve accessibility to the region, including Dulles International Airport, the Loudoun Gateway Metro Station, and its parking facility. This project will enhance mobility within the heavily traveled area and offer alternative routes for local travelers who wish to avoid the Dulles Greenway while still reaching their destinations.
THE CHALLENGE
The Shellhorn Road Extension project, funded by County transportation funds, presents multiple challenges including devising cost-effective strategies for stormwater management, drainage, access, and alignment. The biggest challenge, however, was that more than three-quarters of the proposed route was located within Dulles International Airport’s boundary, property governed by Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA), an independent entity.
THE SOLUTION
After extensive coordination and collaboration with MWAA on multiple aspects of the project including roadway realignment, stormwater management, drainage, and access, J2’s final design proposed cost-effective solutions that met all stakeholder needs and satisfied often contradictory regulations of each entity. Solutions included using existing roadway and infrastructure, relocation of an intersection onto airport property, and stormwater management that was highly effective and respected the environment.
