COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN APPROACH THAT BALANCED FUNCTION, COST, AND CONSTRUCTABILITY
J2 provided civil engineering, surveying, landscape architecture, and construction administration services for a new 209,748 SF, four-story middle school, designed to serve up to 1,445 students. Site developments included parking lots, travel ways, utility design and extensions, stormwater management, athletic fields, turn lanes, and a new intersection traffic signal. Uniquely, J2 has been involved in the master planning of the entire educational campus, which will ultimately house a high school, middle school, and elementary school.

The Solution
THE SOLUTION
J2’s solution involved proactive communication, detailed phasing strategies, and early conflict resolution during the design phase. During construction, J2 quickly responded to unexpected rock and earthwork by coordinating with stakeholders to identify and implement on-site solutions, helping to minimize delays and maintain the project schedule to support the school’s opening for the Fall 2024 school year.
THE CHALLENGE
The project faced significant challenges including steep grading around the building pad, requiring close coordination with the architect to maintain ADA compliance and site access. Stormwater design was complex, with an underground facility located beneath an athletic field that required careful layout and phasing. Utility extensions had to align with roadway improvements and traffic signal installation to avoid delays. During construction, significantly more rock and earthwork were encountered than expected, requiring quick action to keep the project on track.
