Waxpool Road & Faulkner Parkway Roundabout

IMPROVING SMOOTHER TRAFFIC MOVEMENTS WHILE ENHANCING PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

This innovative intersection is a hybrid-turbo roundabout developed at the intersection of Waxpool Road and Faulkner Parkway. Originally part of Loudoun County’s Intersection Improvement Program, the project was later incorporated into a proffered agreement for the Waxpool Crossing development. Initial studies conducted by Loudoun County identified a proposed two-lane roundabout configuration. J2 worked closely with VDOT to develop an approved hybrid-turbo roundabout that addressed safety concerns while maintaining the desired level of service (LOS) set by the County’s original two-lane roundabout concept.

THE CHALLENGE

This project involved retrofitting a skewed intersection with limited right-of-way in a residential area, presenting several design challenges. The County’s proffers required a two-lane roundabout, but the acute-angle approach and unbalanced traffic volumes made it difficult to control vehicle speeds and ensure smooth traffic flow. Additionally, VDOT raised concerns that a multi-lane roundabout could lead to driver confusion and compromise safety. The design also needed to meet both the County’s requirements and VDOT’s strict safety and performance standards while minimizing impacts on adjacent properties and utilities.

THE SOLUTION

The project team implemented a hybrid-turbo roundabout design, which optimized traffic flow, enhanced safety, and addressed VDOT’s concerns about driver confusion. This design effectively managed vehicle speeds and unbalanced traffic volumes while maintaining operational efficiency. By carefully positioning the roundabout within the constrained right-of-way, the team minimized impacts on adjacent properties and utilities, significantly reducing costs. The design’s efficiency also streamlined the permitting process, allowing construction to begin ahead of schedule and delivering a safer intersection for the community.

“This proposed roundabout should be considered for an award being the first hybrid-turbo roundabout design approved in VA."
