May 2026 -- At J2, living out our core value of People First means recognizing the importance of supporting not only professional growth, but personal well-being too. During Mental Health Awareness Month, we asked employees to share the habits, activities, and strategies that help them recharge, manage stress, and maintain balance in their everyday lives.

From getting outside for fresh air to spending time with family, hobbies, and coworkers, the responses served as a reminder that mental well-being looks different for everyone, and that small moments of care can make a big difference.

Taking Small Moments to Recharge

Many employees shared that some of the most effective ways to reset during the workday are also the simplest: stepping away from the desk, taking a walk, getting outside, or connecting with coworkers.

“Just simply getting up from my desk, walking around, and talking with coworkers helps me take a quick mental break."
“I try to take a few minutes every couple hours to look out the window or look away from my computer.”
“Get up and walk around.”

Several responses also highlighted the positive impact of fresh air, movement, and nature.

“Being outside does wonders for me — nature, fresh air and sunshine make me happy.”
“Exercise helps me clear my mind and reset after a stressful day.”

Others emphasized the importance of slowing down mentally and giving themselves space to regroup.

“Step away and regroup when at a wall.”

Finding Joy Outside of Work

When asked what activities bring happiness or help decompress outside of work, employees shared a wide variety of hobbies and interests. Some found balance through exercise, sports, or outdoor activities, while others enjoyed quieter creative outlets like baking, crafting, reading, or gaming.

A few of the many activities employees mentioned included:

  • Traveling

  • Exercise and fitness

  • Hiking and being outdoors

  • Baking and cooking

  • Video games and board games

  • Spending time with family and friends

  • Sports and recreation

  • Crafts and DIY projects

  • Reading and relaxing at home

While everyone’s interests were different, the common theme was clear: making time for activities you genuinely enjoy is an important part of maintaining overall well-being.

Managing Stress and Giving Yourself Grace

Many employees shared practical strategies they use to manage stress, especially during busy or overwhelming periods. A recurring theme throughout the responses was focusing energy on what can be controlled and learning to give yourself grace.

“Separating stress into things I can control vs. things I can’t control.”
“Be kind to yourself and give yourself some grace. Stop expecting yourself to be 100% all the time.”
“Consider, will this particular situation matter in 1 week, 1 month, or 1 year? This always helps me direct my energy efficiently.”

Others highlighted the importance of leaning on coworkers and asking for support when needed.

“For work-related stress, talk to your coworkers. They might be able to help you or at least strategize with you to manage your workload.”
“Don’t try fixing it in a day — ask for help.”

Creating Healthy Balance

When it came to maintaining work-life balance, employees emphasized the importance of boundaries, flexibility, and finding ways to disconnect mentally after the workday ends.

“Setting boundaries.”
“I like to jot down my top priorities for the next day before I end my day. It helps me turn my brain off when it wants to stay on.”
“I use my daily commute time to decompress from the work day so that when I get home I am no longer focused on work.”

Many responses also reflected appreciation for a workplace culture that values employees as people first.

Continuing the Conversation

Mental Health Awareness Month serves as an important reminder that supporting mental well-being is an ongoing effort, not just a once-a-year conversation. At J2, People First means encouraging balance, supporting one another, and recognizing that small daily habits can have a meaningful impact.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey and shared their experiences and advice. By learning from one another and continuing open conversations around mental health, we can help create a healthier, more supportive workplace for everyone.
