June 2024 -- J2 is pleased to announce Gus Brush, PE, and Sebastian Sandoval, PE, both leaders in the firm’s land development division, as new shareholders. J2’s vision of planning for the future of the firm was a key driver in the internal ownership transition, naming Brush and Sandoval as the newest principals.
“It was very important to J2 and our culture to plan now to continue the legacy of J2 for generations to come. Bringing Gus and Sebastian on as shareholders helps ensure the J2 name and founders’ vision is continued into the future,” said Bob Brown, PE, J2 president and principal. As the newest shareholders, Brush and Sandoval represent the future direction of the firm. “These key leadership additions demonstrate the commitment to securing J2 as a legacy firm and represent unlimited opportunities going forward,” said J2 cofounder and principal Jeff Gilliland, PE.
Brush, J2’s land development market sector leader in the Arlington office, joined the firm in 2020. He shares J2’s vision for engineering: to design projects that benefit the world around them. Born and raised in Virginia, Brush attended George Mason University, earning a bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental, and infrastructure engineering.
With a robust background in site/civil engineering for both public and private sector development, he has overseen many projects that have shaped the landscape of Virginia, including the mixed-use development Celebrate Virginia North and South, the residential developments England Run, Ashbrook, and Jackson Village, and multiple infrastructure projects for the Loudoun County Department of Transportation and Capital Infrastructure.
“The ability to directly guide the firm’s future while providing expertise and growth opportunities to others at J2 is personally and professionally gratifying,” said Brush.
As the lead in the Arlington office, Brush will focus on building the J2 brand and expanding its presence in the pivotal Arlington-Alexandria-Falls Church market.
Sandoval, who opened the firm’s Dumfries office in 2017, has been with J2 for over 15 years. He has been instrumental in key site development projects, including several within the Potomac Shores development in Prince William County and multiple schools in Loudoun County.
Sandoval is focused on expanding the firm’s services along the I-95 corridor in Stafford and Prince William Counties, among others, to support J2's goals in both public and private development work. He has significantly contributed to growing J2’s unique culture. “Sebastian single-handedly opened the Dumfries office seven years ago. He’s since grown that office into a significant contributor of technical expertise and revenue for the firm,” said Brown.
Sandoval brings a leadership perspective to his new role, stating,
“This new role lets me focus on both my team and the firm. My goal is to create a welcoming environment and build a positive employee experience where each team member feels valued and is excited to come to work each day.”
A civil engineering graduate of George Mason University, Sandoval is active in NAIOP and NVBIA.
In addition to their roles as shareholders, Brush and Sandoval have also been named as principals. “Sebastian is a natural fit as a shareholder—he was J2’s seventh employee. He’s grown along with the firm, making a definitive and indelible mark on shaping our culture,” said J2 cofounder and principal Jim Bishoff, PE. “Gus has brought a fresh perspective to the firm, forming crucial relationships with clients while helping them realize their visions. Both Sebastian and Gus have significantly contributed to the growth and success of the Dumfries and Arlington offices, respectively, and we’re excited to have their enthusiasm and talent on the leadership team as we look to the future,” said Bishoff.
